Job Description: 

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is seeking qualified applicants for the Chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia. Ranked 5th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the DNP Nurse Anesthesia program at the University of Pittsburgh prepares students through course work that develops knowledge and skill in anesthesia practice as well as in organizational and leadership skills. The rigorous curriculum features courses addressing the chemistry and physics of anesthesia, advanced pharmacology, advanced physiology and pathophysiology, basic-to-advanced principles of anesthesia care, anesthesia technology, team training, patient safety, and the professional role. This full-time, tenure- or appointment-stream faculty position can be appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor rank. This leadership faculty position will be responsible for overseeing the overall function of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia. Faculty responsibilities include teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

Administrative responsibilities will include:

  • Liaising with the Office of the Dean and other administrative groups on matters related to department faculty and staff
  • Leading Department of Nurse Anesthesia faculty meetings, overseeing the assignment of department courses
  • Creating opportunities and providing support for Nurse Anesthesia faculty development activities
  • Mentoring faculty in research and quality improvement projects
  • Interviewing faculty candidates and providing input on potential contribution to the department in both research and teaching roles, and strategic planning for individual faculty development
  • Other duties may be assigned based on department needs.

Minimum Qualifications for Consideration:

  • Candidate must be board certified as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and hold an unencumbered license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (or hold an unencumbered multi-state license from a compact state)
  • Proven administrative capabilities in leading and managing in academic and curricular activities, including didactic and clinical graduate courses; conducts independent research/scholarship; has leadership skills in: teaching, research/scholarship, and service
  • An earned doctorate in nursing or a field related to the area of scholarship.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the anesthesiologist, provides perioperative anesthesia care in support of orthopaedic surgical procedures. Administers anesthetic; provides pre-operative evaluation and post-operative follow-up. Functions as a patient advocate and confidant, advisor and liaison between patients, families, nurses, and physicians. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Current license by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a registered professional nurse. Certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). Must be ACLS and PALS certified. Minimum of 1 year of experience preferred, preferably in Orthopaedics.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited program of nurse anesthesia education. Master’s Degree in Nursing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs pre-anesthetic evaluations with appropriate documentation of findings and pertinent information regarding the choice of anesthesia. Reviews condition of the patient and their medical record immediately prior to induction, including pertinent lab data, time of administration, dosage of pre-anesthesia, and an appraisal of any changes in the condition of the patient. Interviews and examines patients preparing to undergo anesthesia to ensure he/she is an appropriate candidate for the planned anesthetic. Makes recommendations for anesthetic plans appropriate to the patient’s condition and the procedure to be performed. Verifies function of equipment prior to the administration of anesthesia. Administers anesthesia to patients; ensures adequate ventilation and circulatory function of the patient during all anesthetics. Performs intra-operative monitoring, remaining continuously present to monitor the patient and provide anesthesia care. Performs appropriate, complete, and timely documentation of the anesthesia record, including post-operative orders. Accompanies patients to PACU, providing appropriate personnel a complete report of specific problems presented by the patient’s condition, the anesthetic agent used, drugs given, reversal agents, and surgical procedures performed. Evaluates patients appropriate for discharge and signs discharge order. Participates in continual training and education opportunities as an integral part of maintaining the delivery of high quality care. Adheres to system-wide and department-specific policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with all members of the patient’s care team. CRNAs are medically directed by anesthesiologists.
