Once again the Spring Symposium in Hershey has exceeded all expectations. Over 600 CRNAs were in attendance, including AANA President Jim Walker. Educational sessions were reportedly very stimulating and state of the science. The College Bowl was well organized this year by Student Board Rep Michael Lord and his strong alliance of SRNA representatives from all but one Pennsylvania Program. - Study Shows CRNA-Only Anesthesia Delivery Most Cost Effective
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) acting as the sole anesthesia provider is the most cost effective model of anesthesia delivery, according to a new study conducted by Virginia-based The Lewin Group and published in the May/June 2010 issue of the Journal of Nursing Economics.More information may be found on the AANA Website.

- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting healthcare professionals not to use certain intravenous (IV) bags of metronidazole, ondansetron, and ciprofloxacin because of potential contamination.
FDA has received reports of floating matter in IV bags manufactured by Claris Lifesciences Limited, in Ahmedabad, India.More information may be found on the FDA Website, as well as the opportunity to sign up for these alerts.

- Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Update
On April 15, 2010, President Obama signed into law the “Continuing Extension Act of 2010.†This law extends through May 31, 2010, the zero percent update to the MPFS that was in effect for claims with dates of service January 1, 2010 through March 31, 2010. The law is retroactive to April 1, 2010. Consequently, effective immediately, claims with dates of service April 1 and later, which were being held by Medicare contractors, are being released for processing and payment.

- The State Board of Nursing welcomes its newest member, Bette Wildgust, CRNA, MS, MSN.
She was confirmed as a member of the State Board of Nursing on March 16, 2010. Bette was privileged in taking the oath of office as a member of the State Board of Nursing at the April meeting at Villanova University, where she is a clinical associate professor and program director of the Villanova University College of Nursing Crozer-Chester Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia.

- House Bill 1866 hearing before the PA House Professional Licensure Committee
It was a most spectacular day in Harrisburg, as well over 100 CRNA's and SRNA's joined together to meet with their Representatives in the Capitol. Find more information on the Lobby Day Page. After encouragement and much time on the part of the PANA Board and President Joseph D'Amico, the PA DOH has issued a ruling allowing SRNAs to gain clinical experience at ASF's if certain guidelines are met.View this missive here
