- Congratulations to PANA President Kelly L. Wiltse Nicely, PhD, CRNA, who has been appointed by the National Academies to represent the AANA on the Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education! Nominated by the AANA for the post, Dr. Wiltse Nicely will serve on this multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral, international group that is empanelled to advance the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing and Lancet Commission reports.
The Forum intends to conduct two public workshops per year as well as an annual meeting. Health care education consortiums in North America, South America, Africa and Asia will participate in the workshops along with Dr. Wiltse Nicely and members of the Global Forum.
Dr. Wiltse Nicely is an Assistant Professor of Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Pennsylvania and currently serves as President of the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists. She received a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, a master of science in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctor of philosophy in nursing from the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania.

Congress approved legislation providing for 10 months’ relief from 26.2 percent Medicare cuts that were going to hit March 1. What’s next? A postelection lame-duck session of Congress will be needed late 2012 to fix even larger cuts that strike Jan. 1, 2013. Thanks to AANA members, over 5,000 strong CRNA messages landed on Capitol Hill! - Amanda Rossman SRNA, a graduate student in the York College/WellSpan Heath Nurse Anesthetist Program, wrote the winning manuscript in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Student Writing Contest!
Her manuscript was titled "The Physiology of the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor and its Importance in the Administration of Anesthesia." find more here …

View the Center for Medicare Services Report …Payment is currently being calculated for non-medically directed CRNA services in a Method II CAH without a CRNA pass-through exemption based on a 20 percent reduction of the fee schedule amount before deductible and coinsurance are calculated. This article clarifies the payment calculation for these services... sort of.

- Study Shows CRNA-Only Anesthesia Delivery Most Cost Effective
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) acting as the sole anesthesia provider is the most cost effective model of anesthesia delivery, according to a new study conducted by Virginia-based The Lewin Group and published in the May/June 2010 issue of the Journal of Nursing Economics.More information may be found on the AANA Website.

Pittsburgh VA CRNA's volunteer as medical support at the 31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games Christine Allen-Sanders CRNA, reports that 31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games held in Pittsburgh was well attended by local CRNAs. Several of the VA CRNAs volunteered to work on the medical support team. The picture has Sally Ollio. Diane Boettger and Christine Allen-Sanders all CRNAs from the PGH VA.
