Hello Pennsylvania CRNA's

Normally people take off a little during the summer, and relax, or putter around their homes making it a place they can relax and enjoy sometime in the distant future. I say distant, because generally we're the ones doing the long hours in the OR, and taking good care of our patients. Thanks to concerted efforts by the Winter Group, the PANA and it's membership will work even harder this summer, to help convince the Pennsylvania legislature CRNA patient care is never more important then now. As a result of Peg and Angie's efforts, the legislature has never been more familiar with CRNA's, and their professionalism. Peg has worked very hard to open the ears of the legislature, and has been successful in instituting legislative action for the PANA. Most recently, Representative Merle Phillips has agreed to amend his legislation to include language favorable to CRNA's. Please take a look at this amendment, and IMMEDIATELY contact your State Representative and ask for them to co-sponsor this change! You can contact them directly via phone, (We hope you have that kind of a relationship with them), or you can use the new PANA legislative contact page to send them an email message. Login to the Members Only page, and click on the checkmark to get to the contact page.
Please do so TODAY, since this action has occurred rapidly, and we need to show a concerted, unified effort to get the attention of the Legislature. With an excellent effort, more communication can occur! We're all bustin our butts to help secure your practice. Help us by getting involved. This organization needs the support and help of ALL it's members.

Please Remember a Special Colleague, Susan Taylor, in Your Hearts

We all know as healthcare providers, that inspite of tremendous effort, life cannot always be maintained. Our dear friend, and PANA Past President, Susan Taylor died after a spirited battle with cancer. She was extremely active in the PANA both on a district level and state level. She was elected to the state offices of Trustee, Secretary and Vice President before being elected to the office of President in 2001. During her tenures, Sue was a true watchdog of our profession and always fought hard for the rights of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to practice in the state of Pennsylvania. As chairman of the Practice Committee, Sue was the PANA representative member of Medicare's Anesthesia Advisory Committee. Sue could often be seen in Harrisburg attending meetings of the State Board of Nursing, the State Board of Medicine and the Department of Health.

Throughout her life, Sue was extremely vigorous and she enjoyed various activities, including golfing, swimming and biking. She was a lifelong member of Market Square Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and trustee and was currently an elder. She served as chairwoman for the "Doorway to the Future" campaign and also participated in several mission trips to Central America.

Two services will be held in Sue's memory on Saturday, June 24, 2006. The first will be a Catholic Mass at St. Peter's Church in Elizabethtown at 8:30 a.m. with Father David Danneker celebrating. At 11:00 a.m. a memorial service to honor Susan's life will be held at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg with Reverend James Brown commemorating her life. Please stop by and pay your respects if you can. Her husband Tom would appreciate that.

Fall Conference and Business Meeting

The PANA Program Committee has found a unique meeting place for this falls PANA conference. While the agenda is still being formulated, the venue is solid, and classic Pennsylvania. The PANA will have a secured block of rooms available for its members who wish to stay at the Gettysburg hotel. Distinguished names such a President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Carl Sandburg, Henry Ford, General Ulysses S. Grant and Daniel Webster have enjoyed the attentive hospitality of the Gettysburg Hotel. During the Civil War, the Best Western Gettysburg Hotel witnessed the thunderous Battle of Gettysburg.

Spring Meeting Resources on www.pana.org

We've collected several of the Powerpoint presentations from this years PANA Symposium. Past symposia presentations are also available online. Titles include discussion of new muscle relaxant reversals, as well as incite on starting a new CRNA owned business. Go to the Online resource page to see what's available. This is a GREAT resource for new and upcoming research and information. All files are saved as Adobe PDF files for easy and rapid download.

It's Not Too Late to Volunteer and Run for a PANA Office!

All right friends, it's time for everyone to seriously think about running for a PANA office. For those who have never seen the PANA Board in action, I suggest you attend the next meeting to see just what goes on. I think you'll find it both stimulating and satisfying. This organization has made a wonderful contribution to the profession of nurse anesthesia both in Pennsylvania, and nationally. It's time everyone made the effort to get involved. Logon to the Members Section of www.pana.org, and follow the link to complete the willingness to serve form. Information is available on the web form relating to requirements for each position. If you don't remember your password, use the "Forgotten Your Password" link to have it emailed to you. If you've received this newsletter, we have your correct email address! If you are totally web phobic and your son, daughter or significant other is reading you this, just call (610-841-4910) or Email Julie Antidormi, CRNA (jules1@ptd.net) Nominating Committee Chair, and tell her your interested in running.
