PANA 2008 Hilda Salomon Award Winners
PANA announces 2008 Hilda Salomon Award Winners
at the Spring meeting in Hershey
Hilda Salomon, CRNA, PANAs first president, was a pioneer in furthering the profession of nurse anesthesia. Serving as the 3rd President and charter member of the AANA she was known for her commitment to education and equality among nurse anesthetists. A radical and pioneer in her time, she dedicated her life to nurse anesthesia by educating students and in training many of the Army nurse anesthetists during World War II. Perseverance, patience, hard work, vision and the will to further the profession are the enduring qualities of Hilda Salomon. It is these qualities that are exemplified by a Hilda Salomon Award recipient.

Hilda Salomon was quoted as saying "...may you live long and continue your untiring service to humanity." The outstanding commitment to the community of nurse anesthetists and the demonstration of these qualities are portrayed by our honor- ees today. The will to further the future of nurse anesthesia and work together for common goals are themes of the past and present. We look to these pillars of our association for guidance and leadership and their continued "untiring service to humanity."

Don sets the pace as being the first CRNA owned company in Pennsylvania to acquire an exclusive contract with a surgical specialty hospital.

Throughout childhood Don's passion for business and the need to help others was always strong. After graduation in 1967 from Chester High School, Don entered St. Francis College in Loretta, Pennsylvania where he obtained a degree in Business Administration. After St. Francis, Don entered St. Joseph's Nursing School in Reading, Pennsylvania and upon graduation in 1974, enrolled in the Reading Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia. After graduation 1976, Don went to work at Lehigh Valley Hospital and shortly after became chief of their anesthesia department. Don finished his education at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia where he obtained his Masters Degree in 1986.

During the time at LVH, Don's love for business and his need to help others inspired him to develop the "Connell Airway." On August 17, 1999 Don became the first and only nurse or nurse anesthetists in the United States to ever design and patent an airway, now known as the "Con-Air." Don's airway is manufactured by TYCO and is used widely throughout Europe and is awaiting FDA approval.

Having accomplished his desire to excel in the business field, development of his company and the patent of his airway, Don's other passion "the need to help others" takes him traveling to the Dominican Republic where he works with the organization known as "Healing the Children."
